Dim Progress Check #4 - “Two Steps Back, Three Steps Forward”

Our group’s previous animatic pass came with many lessons. Up to this point, it seems we were pushing for our scenes to be in 3D for no reason other than they should be. Because of this, many parts of our story were underdeveloped or communicated in a way that added further confusion to our developing story. Furthermore, we received feedback that our story was pretty convoluted, which I agree with. There are many arcs that we seemingly rush together and none really end up satisfying. I recall Jeremy saying that once he thought he understood what was going on, everything would shift.

Because of this, going forward, we are prioritizing developing further solidifying our story. We have some 3D assets, like our the blocking of our side characters and main sets, but we are pushing all of that aside to refine and adjust the story. Because of this, we plan on our next animatic pass to be a beat board or, at most, a 2D animatic. So far, I have contributed all of the composing for our animatics. I provided a template for exporting our playblasts, naming conventions, and file organization.

Following our second iterative animatic review, our team decided to go out for dinner. Prior to the dinner, we were all focused on rewriting our story beats so it was fun to reward ourselves both with food and a good team bonding event. While we may have less to present at the moment, it is important that we are nipping these issues with our story at the bud. Hopefully, this rocky start will make it a smooth ride going forward.
